The Humble Beginnings

Welcome to Vinland Electrical

Yes, we're electricians right here in Newfoundland, and yes, the trade runs in the family. Goes back to my great-grandfather, a fella who was wiring up houses back when electricity itself was practically brand new and twice as mysterious.

Now, Great-Grandad, bless his cotton socks (or maybe his asbestos-lined gloves, who knows?), was a pioneer. A real go-getter. He was out there, threading wires through walls, installing the latest and greatest electrical marvel of the age: knob and tube wiring. State-of-the-art stuff back then, apparently. He probably thought he was setting up future generations for a life of easy, reliable power.

And he did! Just... not quite in the way he imagined.

Vinland Electrical is a multi-generational, family-owned electrical contracting company serving St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula.

The Present

Fast forward a few decades, and here I am. Also an electrician. Also in Newfoundland. Also working in some of the same lovely, character-filled homes he might have worked on. And what am I often doing? Carefully, painstakingly, and sometimes while muttering things under my breath that would make a sailor blush, removing his pride and joy – that very same knob and tube.

There's a special kind of feeling you get, perched in a dusty attic or cramped crawlspace somewhere between Quidi Vidi and Cape Spear, wrestling with ceramic knobs that haven't seen daylight since Confederation, realizing, "Yup. This is probably his." I like to think of it as a long-term family project. He started it; I'm... aggressively updating it.

The Pledge
